German Feel-Good-Experience Busted

No this is not, as the pictures may suggest, about Guantanamo and the misdeeds of the enemy of everything that is good and noble in Germany, the Americans. This is about two men who were suspected of beating a dark-skinned man into a coma on Easter night last year in Potsdam. Two befitting perpetrator-figures were quickly found and to the glee of the media helicoptered heavily blindfolded and handcuffed from Berlin to the premises of the Federal Investigator in Karlsruhe who found the case important enough to grab it contra legem from the regional investigator. The German public and media stopped – just - short of calling for wood and matches for the two arrested men and everything was done to show Ermyas Mulugeta, the victim, in the most shining of lights. Ermyas M. "the family man", "the engineer", "the German citizen", Ermyas who "played soccer with children".

Of course, even those outside the "fight racism anywhere as long as it's safely within what is perceived as 'right-wing extremism'" faction where all hot and bothered about the incident because it bode ill for the imminent (football) World Cup.

BILD, a particularly nasty shitrag and forever on the side of the current Zeitgeist, whatever it calls for, screeched: "Potsdam Mugging Night: They Only Stopped When They Thought He'd Be Dead".

Well, it wasn't quite so, in fact hardly anything of the above. And we've commented on it before.

Ermyas Mulugeta, the family man, had, on Easter night, not quite been on his way to Easter Vigil and Solemn High Mass with his wife and children when he was hit at four o'clock. He had been on something like a pub-crawl and, pissed as a newt with a blood alcohol level around 2 o/oo, thrown out of a disco, where he had had a drunken brawl with two men already. He then got into a screaming match with a bus driver who had insisted on giving him change in coins for a 20 Euro note and after he left the vehicle, he embarged on a fight with two men by kicking them. At 1,97 m, roughly six foot seven inches, Mulugeta wasn't physically quite the typical victim either. He too, had a history of aggression and intimidating people.

So it shouldn't have come as a surprise when the doctors found out that his life-threatening injuries corresponded with falling and hitting a hard surface and not with being punched or kicked.

Confirmation of the fact that he had, in fact, started the brawl that sent him to hospital, transpired only very slowly. The incident had been partly pieced together from a recording of the voice mail box of the victim's wife whom he had called while the fray started. The epithet "Nigger" was audible, preceded by "Schweinesau" (which is best translated as "swine sow") uttered by the victim-to-be. "Schweinesau", so Mrs. Mulugeta (of whom according to some sources Ermyas is separated) stated, was one of her husband's terms of endearment for her and nobody laughed.

Candlelight vigil for Ermyas Mulugeta.

Last Friday now, the two men accused of having beaten Mulugeta into a coma, the two men worthy of Guantanamo-treatment, those skin-headed paragon-perpetrators were acquitted, the judge following the application of the public prosecutor. The lawyers for the defendants said in their closing arguments that the case had become a political issue, which it had been indeed from the start.

What remains is a faint feeling of Schadenfreude at the idiocy of the Gutmenschen faction who react to each and every misdeed, real or perceived, of the "extremist right", real or perceived, with outraged Pavlovian promptness.

Largely unnoted remained what the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine reported at an unconspicious corner of their website FAZ.NET, namely that shortly after the crime a (female) public prosecutor who was not involved in the case threatened one of the defense lawyers with a criminal charge should he make known the true facts of a case, which didn't resemble the so far alleged Right-wing extremist excess of violence.

And of course, nobody with a mind yet not entirely removed from reality will expect any outrage over the treatment of two innocent men. The media have, after all, long ago jettisoned any resemblance of clarifying what really happened. It's all about the correct societal reaction, which has been removed from any cause long ago. And never mind the future of two little men without importance. They are not the sort one sees at candlelight vigils and peace rallies anyway.

Disappointment that even a biased justice system wouldn't go out of the way of due process to satisfy the politically public urges hangs like a wet rag now over the German media.

Ermyas Mulugeta before the crime and at the trial, where he couldn't remember anything.

Gutmenschen in full fly: "Why" said the placard at the rally last year and: "Which Black will be next?"

Never mind, really, about the victim either. The interest in coloured victims fades as quickly as the perpetrators are not ethnic Germans and thus do not serve to hatch the odious feel-good sentiment because they can not, by any stretch of the imagination, be subsumed under the "right-wing extremist" label. Like for example the Turks who had recently beaten another African into a coma. Different from the Potsdam case, it never made the headlines.

The Disbanded People

60 construction workers building the Communist showpiece Stalin-Allee, the "first socialist avenue in Germany" in East Berlin went on strike on 16 June 1953, to demand a reduction in recent work-quota increases. They called for a general strike the next day. By dawn of June 17, 100,000 protesters had gathered with more arriving throughout the morning. More protests were held all over the GDR.

The initial pleas of the protesters for the reinstatement of the previous lower work quotas turned into political demands. SED functionaries took to the streets and began arguing with small groups of protesters. Eventually, the workers demanded the resignation of the East German government. The government turned to their Soviet brethren for military support.

At noon, the Volkspolizei (East Germany's "people's police") had trapped many of the demonstrators in an open square. When dozens of T-34 Soviet tanks appeared, the uprising started to lose its clout and although there were no major assaults on the military, a massacre followed. It is still unclear how many people died during the uprising and by the death sentences which followed. The official number of victims is 55. After the evaluation of documents accessible since reunification, the number of victims appears to be at least 125, whereas higher estimates put the number of dead at 267.

20,000 people were imprisoned as felons, three were decapitated later. Summarily executed were: Kurt Arndt, Eisleben; Ernst Markgraf, Stralsund; Heinz Brandt, Rostock; Walter Schädlich, Leipzig; Eberhard von Cancrin, Geithain; Axel Schäfer, Erfurt; Alfred Dartsch, Magdeburg; Günter Schwarzer, Gotha; Alfred Diener, Jena; Heinz Sonntag, Leipzig; Willy Göttling, Berlin; Hermann Stahl, Eisleben; Hartmann, Delitzsch; Herbert Strauch, Magdeburg; Peter Heider, Magdeburg; Hans Wojkowski, Stralsund; Vera Knoblauch, Rostock; Walter Krüger, Eisleben and three unknown Volkspolizisten. Willy Göttling was from West Berlin. He was sentenced to death and shot because of the "brigand-like excesses against the ruling power and the people". His body was never released.

In memory of the 1953 East German rebellion, West Germany established June 17 as a national holiday. Upon reunification in October 1990, the "Day of German Unity" was moved to October 3, the date of the formal reunification, thus removing it firmly from its roots.

Just in time for the 54th memorial of July 17, 1953, yesterday and after the merger with a smaller West German sister party, Die Linke, the successor of the Communist party responsible for the bloodshed on June 17, 1953, has become the third biggest party in Germany following CDU/CSU and SPD.

Communist poet Bertolt Brecht in his inspired memorial "The Solution" stated in 1953:

After the uprising of the 17th June
The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had flyers doled out in the Stalinallee
Saying that the people
Had idly surrendered the trust of the government
And could win it back only
By redoubled toil. In that case
Wouldn't it be easier for the government
To disband the people
And elect another?

Brecht got it almost right. In the meantime, the people has disbanded and re-invented itself.

Obituary for Kurt Waldheim

Kurt Waldheim, the former UN secretary general and president of Austria whose reputation abroad suffered when it expired that he was involved in war crimes on the Balkan in WWII, died Thursday at the age of 88.

About time.

Are you out of your minds, Americans?

You have considerable problems. Massive annual federal budget deficits, an obviously uncontrollable influx of illegal immigrants, the shortfalls of the social security and health care systems, and an ever-dwindling support for the war in Iraq, to name only a few. And what are you worrying about? Whether somebody called "Paris Hilton" went justifiedly to prison or rather not.

I do not watch TV and I do not read glossy magazines since the Tatler has largely given in to trash-culture and -society, so I had to look up "Paris Hilton". She is a very moderately pretty but decisively vulgar young woman in her twenties and best described by three epithets: blonde, blonde and blonde. She has a lot of money which she hasn't earned and doesn't shoulder the responsibility that comes with inherited wealth (hers is from the "Hilton" hotel chain, so I read).

I give an aviating fornication whether what she committed is filed under "felony" or rather "misdemeanour" or whatever, whether she violated her probation or was a first-time offender or whether the judge was an attention-seeker, leftist liberal commie who was out to sock it to an enemy of the people, or a staunch defender of law and order. I do not care what this unspeakable creature did AT ALL. I am just asking you: Are you out of your minds?

While wanting-to-be-taken-seriously "pundits", like that cackling parrot Ann Coulter who would say anything to boost her book-sales figures or viewing rates, denounce the verdict or, like Debbie "Those who like soccer are enemies of America" Schlussel, the woman whose official picture gives a new meaning to the word "PhotoShop job" and who hasn't even Coulters doubtless entertainment value, are all for it (or is it the other way round?), another trial found infinitely less attention.

Banaz Mahmod was just 20 years old and her only crime was getting out of an abusive marriage into which she had been forced at 17, then falling in love with a man her family did not accept. After she was reported missing for three months, Banaz' dead body was found in a buried suitcase in April 2006.

Responsible for this were members of Banaz' family, her father, Mahmod Mahmod, and her uncle Ari Mahmod. Banaz was a daughter of Kurdish immigrants. In the eyes of her father and her uncle, by entering into a relationship without their consent, Banaz had "shamed" the family. Last week, the two men were convicted of murder at Old Bailey court in London.

They call that "hono(u)r killing" in Muslim culture and in large parts of the Western media too and without quotes.

Before she was murdered, Banaz had made several attempts to warn police that her life was in danger, even naming those she thought would kill her. It was revealed in court, too, that her statement was obviously not taken seriously enough by investigating officers.

They were probably too busy watching smutty "pickies" of Paris Hilton.

And for good measure, it's time again for another posting of Fariba Tajiani-Emamqoli's last pictures, and while I usually ask politicians, men of the cloth, writers, feminists and general bleeding heart do-gooders where they had been when Fariba was hanged, this round is for "conservative" American "pundits":

WHERE WERE YOU, WHERE WERE YOUR VOICES, WHEN FARIBA TAJIANI-EMAMQOLI WAS HANGED?

And while they are hanging another Fariba in Iran and another beautiful, brave and innocent young woman is "honour killed" right in our middle, just go on contemplating Paris Hilton's parking tickets.

292 Google News hits for Banaz-Mahmod 10,059 for Paris-Hilton.

Earlier postings of Fariba's last pictures here, here, here and here.

Solidarity with Ralph Giordano

This is the, so far, last chapter of the Cologne mosque drama. What started as a travesty has developed into a major tragedy in the meantime.

Like many other people critical of Islam, German-Jewish anti-Fascist journalist and writer Ralph Giordano, a Holocaust-survivor now in his 84th year, has been subjected to death threats.

Why? because he, too, had denounced the building of the mosque at Cologne.

This petition takes up his words and arguments. It is online now in English and French as well.

The help and support of all courageous and wellmeaning people all over the world is needed.
To: Politicians & Media

We, too say: "No, no and no again!"

Following the murder of Dutch film director Theo van Gogh and the death threats against Salman Rushdie, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Ibn Warraq, the Dutch cabaret artist Ewoud Jansen and many others, the Islam-inspired madness has arrived in Germany some time ago already. Muslim fanatics are out to kill Hans-Peter Raddatz, Seyran Ates and Ekin Deligöz and are now targeting Ralph Giordano: The journalist and writer received death threats because he called for "the cancellation of the plans regarding the building of a major mosque in the Cologne suburb of Ehrenfeld, because they are transporting a false image of the real relationship between Muslim minority and the majority of the German society.

Like Ralph Giordano we therefore ask:

- Where are we that we have to check first whether radical Muslims will approve of what we do or leave?
- Where are we that we let religious and other fanatics decide what we are allowed to say and what not in anticipating obedience?
- Where are we that we are caving in to those Islamic ire- and outrage-collectives, obviously retrievable-on-demand by some local Mullahs between Cairo, Iran and Bali, as the Danish "Mohammed cartoon brawl" revealed?

Like Ralph Giordano, we are fed up with the "traditions, customs and habits, which are bastardising any criticism and turn it into insults, but are as quick as extravagant when it comes to name-calling of people of a different faith“. And we, too, are fighting back a "potential blackmailing capacity, which wants to keep us under Islamic supervision and which reaches with its tentacles from the Near- and Middle East right into the heart of Europe."

We therefore stress:

We will not submit freedom of expression to Sharia law!
There is no place anywhere for death threats, antisemitism and Holocaust denial!

We there fore ask politicians and the media:

1. to preserve without trade-off the 200-year-old European achievements of unrestricted personal freedom, freedom of opinion and expression. No person has the right to threaten somebody else with murder because he doesn't like the other person's views;

2. to prosecute without taboo all conditions and circumstances within the Muslim minority that are against the German constitution (Grundgesetz) and therefore inimical to integration, first and foremost the unacceptable status of women;

3. to embark upon a critical examination of those imams and stakeholders who are abusing the liberal framework and tolerance of a free constitution to push through totalitarian views of state and religion within their enclave, who are undermining the conventions of rule of law and constitution, who are teaching hesperophobic indoctrination in line with Sharia law and who reject the standards of democracy such as co-education, sex-education, gym classes, school trips and the equality of the sexes;

4. to embark upon a critical examination of the Koran and the biography of Mohammed;

5. to support all secular Muslims who intend to pave the way to integration by means of reform;

6. to tackle the official integration-, antisemitism- and right-wing-extremism policy in Germany on state- and federal level single-minded- and openly.

We, too say: "No, no and no again!"

About A Blooper of German History

Or: We didn't handle the Jews all that peacefully ...

Cologne Cathedral at the turn of the last century.

Cologne is home to one of the most glorious Christian churches in the world, Cologne Cathedral -- "Der Hohe Dom zu Köln". Its patron saints are Petrus und Maria.

At a height of 157 meter it is the second tallest church in Germany, third tallest worldwide. Many experts see it as a unique harmonisation of all medieval-gothic constructional- and ornamental elements, and it took more than 600 years to complete. "Once the Cathedral is finished, it will be the end of the world", as the saying among the people of Cologne goes.

Ordination to the priesthood at Cologne Cathedral.

Cologne has, too, become the scene of a bizzare modern religious war. In March already, the priest of the Catholic St. Theodore parish had dedicated a Sunday's collection to the construction of a huge new mosque in the Cologne suburb of Ehrenfeld. The parish council had not just unanimously approved the action, but came up with the unusual idea themselves. Its chairman reminded that their own church had been completed only five years ago, and that the Protestant parish in the neighbourhood had given "a nice gift".

"Now we, in turn, should give someone a gift too," Rev. Meurer said, and: "It's only natural that we're helping them [the Muslims]". The parishioners were not so unanimously happy and their view of normality diverted somewhat from that of their pastor, the more as four young Turks had beaten a family man into a coma on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday in Cologne.

Same location some time later: On occasion of the mandatory public hearing concerning the Ehrenfeld mosque on May 29, 2007, the Sozialdezernentin (head of the department overseeing social services) Marlis Bredehorst (left) of the Green party said verbatim, as documented by a recording*: "... and we are really proud in the Federal Republic that we have a peaceful living together between Catholics and Protestants since the Thirty-Year-War**. That isn't all that common, look at Northern Ireland and there is but one blooper***: We didn't handle the Jews all that peacefully, that is the case only since the post-war period ..."****

Bredehorsts post-outrage explanatatory statement was, if anything, even more awful than her initial -- well -- blooper. What she REALLY wanted to say was, as she put it: "... that Germany with its constitutional right of religious freedom can be actually proud of a long history [i.e. two years short of 60 years] and that we have a very peaceful living together of Protestants, Catholics and Semites."

I am seriously grateful that nobody made Bredehorst explain what she was meaning by her explanatory statement. In cases like that I tend to experience an intense bout of Fremdscham.

The head of the Green party in the state of Northrhine-Westphalia, Daniela Schneckenburger, put it like that: "We are glad that in Germany the trust in the travail de mémoire [Holocaust Aufarbeitung is one of those disgusting neo-German vocables, for which I couldn't find a decent English translation and whose approximate meaning "accounting for the past" is about as empty as the brain, heart and conscience of the average German Green party cadre] of the Holocaust has become so strong in the meantime that there are thriving Jewish congregations again and that both, Judaism and Islam are part of multireligious Northrhine-Westphalia."

Of course, she didn't explain what Islam has to do with "Holocaust Aufarbeitung". I, personally, could think of only one connection between the Holocaust and Muslims, but I have a hunch that wasn't quite what Slugburger (I hate to be flip, but I couldn't resist because "Schneckenburger" translates to just that) had in mind. She, too, forgot to mention that her equation of Jews and Muslims somehow doesn't work out because the former don't flare or desecrate the places of worship of the latter whereas it is done the other way round, both, in Germany and worldwide. It must have been some time ago, too, that Jewish youth-gangs beat family men to a pulp in Cologne, because I can't remember it.

As the Rev. Franz Meurer of St. Theodore forgot that it's okay for Protestants to give "nice gifts" to Catholics for the construction of a place of worship because a church is a church is a church, but moronically stupid of Catholics to give "nice gifts" to Muslims to build a Mosque because a Mosque is much more than just a place of worship.

Cologne is home to one of the most glorious Christian churches, Cologne Cathedral -- "Der Hohe Dom zu Köln". Its patron saints are Petrus und Maria.

At a height of 157 meter it is the second tallest church in Germany and third worldwide. Many experts see it as a unique harmonisation of all medieval-gothic constructional- and ornamental elements and it took more than 600 years to complete.

A proud price indeed.

* The recording was put up at the German blog Politically Incorrect.

PI and I have been the target of unjustified accusations of "hatred against Muslims" before. However, when I did my moderate research for this blog entry, I was appalled at the accusations of PI publishing "right wing extremist content" in the mainstream media. The PI team has to scan hundreds of comments every week and there are, no doubt, some that wouldn't survive at my blog, at least not unanswered. But I guess there are limits to what a handful of people who all (so I presume) have a job and a life, can realistically do and I have yet to find a main blog entry at PI that would fit the label of "right wing extremist content". Here we have just another case of da-glo-green envy of the MSM towards an only-too-successful blogger. Kudos, PI!

** I guess the Prussian Kulturkampf in the 19th century when all Catholic bishops were either imprisoned or forced to emigrate is a venial sin for a Protestant. Or maybe it is just another symptom of that hackneyed "being removed from education" thingy (see below) of which Bredehorst is probably suffering herself.

*** She said "Ausrutscher", which I translated as blooper. "Gaffe", "slip-up" or "one-off" would be other possible translations.

**** No, my English hasn't deteriorated, I am just sticking to the general style of Bredehorst's clumsy stammering, which suggests two things, namely that she may be part of the "classes removed from education" (bildungsferne Schichten) herself, she is so fond of quoting and that in Cologne anybody -- but ANYbody -- can become a member of the top-administration.

A different kind of Panzer Ace

On 4th June 1989, 18 years ago today, the student rebellion on the "Place of Heavenly Peace" was turned bloodily down. That day and the following ones, hundreds of protesters were killed.

Symbol and hero of that day was the "Tiananamen Tank Man". He placed himself in the way of an approaching tank column. When the leading tank tried to avoid him, he jumped in its way again and again, gracefully like a ballet dancer, until the tank commander, obviously unnerved, brought his vehicle to a standstill. The young man, who was wearing shopping bags, then climbed the tank to talk to the crew. Then he was taken away by onlookers who seemed to have his best interest in mind.

That is what the brief video footage of the incident shows.

He was executed. He is in prison. His name is Wang Weilin. He is dead. He is alive and hiding. Nobody knows his name. He lives in Taiwan.

The young man who dared to stop a tank column of one of the nastiest dictatorships of the 20th century, shopping bags in hand, shoulders straight, so composed, so poised, wherever he is, that young man is China.

The image above is an Associated Press photograph, it was taken by Jeff Widener on June 5, 1989 from the sixth floor of the Beijing Hotel, about half a mile away through a 400mm lens.

Redneck JonBenet and the Integrity of the Media

Recently, stories about a 11-year old boy in Alabama who had valiantly killed a "wild boar" with a handgun made headlines.

Not too surprisingly, the headline-making picture was soon debunked as a PhotoShop-job. As one commentator put it so aptly: "the real jaw-dropper is that anbody in Alabama could figure out how to do it."

But then, hadn't the family been QUITE that greedy and not enlarged the boar THAT much out of proportion, they might have gotten away with it, but I doubt anybody would accuse them of undue subtlety.

To top it, it expired that it wasn't even a wild boar at all, it wasn't even a feral boar. It was a farm-raised pig (obviously with some boar genes) and it all happened at 200 acre low fence area (also reported as 150 acres). Two men, the father and a "guide", watched with rifles ready while the boy tried to kill the pig, which he finally managed three hours and umpteen shots later, which, incidentally, busts another bug in the story: If the animal had been as aggressive as wild boars tend to be, it would surely have attacked the boy after the first shot.

Of course, as it can be expected from an American audience, everybody who doesn't celebrate the fat little kid's performance is a leftist commie liberal, treehugger and worse. So what are reasons to kill an animal?

Food: Yeah! No doubt they had that in mind when they set off for the "wild boar hunt". Frankly, the Stone-family looks as needy of food as monster pig itself and -- boyoboy -- WILL they enjoy their pork sausages for the rest of the year and part of next, and should the cholesterol kill them off -- Three Cheers to Charles Darwin.

Besides, most people's chops aren't usually tormented to death over a longish period of time. The butcher-farmers I trust shoot their animals on the range, so they never know what hits them, or kill them in their own small abattoir or I buy game at shoots which I attended myself. (More expensive than industrially-produced meat? Certainly. But who said that the lower classes ought to hunt?)

Self-defense: Well, they didn't actually need to go into the area where the pig was fenced in or did they?

Preservation of the ecological balance: Right! That was what the Stone-family certainly had in mind when embarking of their hunting-spree.

Fun: Okay with me, but bragging rights for a 11-year-old boy don't count. And if the more educated classes among those who shoot/hunt don't see a point in chasing a terrified tame animal for hours while blowing holes into it, that doesn't make them liberal leftist commies or treehuggers.

All that said, I am not sure how many of the fakes, lies and exaggerations are coming from the family and how many from the media and this is not about a rather obvious and naive PhotoShop job. This is about American child-rearing values. What is the pathetic little boy who took (how many?) shots to kill a tame pig while his father and a second man with rifles were watching that he would be well and truly physically safe all the time, what is he but the male redneck-version of JonBenet Ramsey? The tool and object of perverted parental projections.

And this is, too and above all, about integrity. I would hate to listen to the howling and whining of the international media and public now had Prince Charles taken his sons to butcher a tame pig. What makes an enjoyable little yarn for the mainstream media as long as it's about some rednecks from the American backwaters, would be an outrage of major proportions had the class enemy done just the same.

Can you spell h-y-p-o-c-r-i-s-y?

Barbra Streisand has forgiven us Germans. She WILL perform in Germany, after all.

Preiskategorie I: Euro 565
Preiskategorie II: Euro 397
Preiskategorie III: Euro 289
Preiskategorie IV: Euro 188
Preiskategorie V: Euro 115

Although her concert in Rome was cancelled due to protests against grotesquely inflated tickets prices from just under $200 to more than $1,200 unexpected production delays, you can now, for not more than a few hundred Euros, listen to Barbra pointing her finger at corporate greed in Germany.

Ever dwindling ticket sales due to grossly overpriced tickets and advancing age of the performer bring to mind Abraham Lincoln, whom I take the freedom to misquote: "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but the odds that the people you can fool all the time will fork out hundreds of (insert currency) a ticket are getting increasingly slim with advancing age."

I have never understood those Holocaust survivors and their children who have forgiven Germany enough to live here. However, Streisand's media-effective shunning of post-war Germany reeks not just of "Sippenhaftung" ("guilty by relation" or "clan liability" are efforts to come close to a translation), which I could even understand to a certain extent. What I can not understand is the blatant and shameless hypocrisy behind it.
